negative sweat test and asthma

- I have a child with asthma. The development curves are below normal. The sweat test was negative. I was tested for CF mutations with negative results. Is there any chance that my child may have CF? Can we do any other tests?

- Dear friend,
Your child suffers from asthma and its development curves are below normal. However, the sweat test was definately negative, as was the testing for CF mutations that you did yourself.
The fact that the curves are low can be attributed to a hereditary disposition (the mother, the father or both parents may be of small statute), or to many other causes except CF.

I would like to emphazise that it is important that the sweat test has been performed by a certified center using pilocarpine ionotophoresis to measure the chloride concentration of the sweat. If this was not the case, or there is any other doubt, the sweat test has to be repeated.
