negative sweat test
- Question
- I would like to ask if an child with asthma and negative sweat test must be tested in some other way, in order to exclude CF as a possible cause for the slow development of the child.
- Answer
- Dear friend,
An important factor is if the value of the sweat test was borderline or not. If it was borderline, then the sweat test must be repeated. If the value continues to be borderline, then the child must be clinically examined in detail and genetically tested for CF.
You should not forget that the slow development of your child may be attributed to many other causes, such as hereditary ones. If the parents are of small statute, then this trait may have been passed to the child as well.

I would like to emphazise that it is important that the sweat test has been performed by a certified center using pilocarpine ionotophoresis to measure the chloride concentration of the sweat. If this was not the case, or there is any other doubt, the swaet test has to be repeated.
