Vitamin D and vitamin A substitution
- Question
- My vitamin D value is 40ng/ml, I take 1000 I.U. cholecalciferol daily. The normal range for vitamin D is up to 100ng/ml; should I aim for a higher value?
My vitamin A value is 39µg/dl, normal range 30-70 µg/dl, should I supplement vitamin A?
- Answer
- Dear questioner,
The vitamin D serum level should be higher than 20ng/ml, however, current data don’t show any advantage of a high vitamin D serum level regarding the improvement of bone density*.
The target range for vitamin A is 200 – 1200 µg/L (20-120µg/dl).
There is a consensus about the general supplementation of fat soluble vitamins in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. However, the serum level should be tested regularly and, if needed, the supplementation should be adjusted. Your values lie within normal range so that I wouldn’t change the dosage or discontinue the intake. Please consult your CF-doctor about this.
I hope to have been helpful with this information.
