Vitamin D

Question
Hello,

My son has CF, and I just heard that his vitamin D level is only at 15 ng/ml. He is an adult of normal weight. How quickly would you saturate and in which doses? The literature has different specifications (ranging from 20.000 IU per day to 200.000 IU per day) until the value reaches 30; after that, 3000 per day?

Regards and thank you.
Answer
Dear questioner,

the literature recommends a dosage of 400 - 1000 IU vitamin D per day. This dosage can be increased for a short term until the vitamin D level is normal. Do consult your CF doctor at the CF clinic about this.

In case your son suffers from pancreatic insufficiency, the dietician at his CF centre should check the pancreatic enzyme therapy. Vitamin D is a liposoluble vitamin, an insufficient dosage of pancreatic enzymes could lead to an unintended excretion of liposoluble vitamins E, D, K, and A.

I hope this answers your question.

Kind regards,
Suzanne van Dullemen
