trypsin normal values
- Question
- What are the normal values for the stool trypsin, in order to exclude CF? My child's values was 1/400.
- Answer
- Dear friend,
The normal value for the stool trypsin test is 1/1600. Values under 1/100 are considered pathologic. Values between 1/100 and 1/1600 are considered a "grey area".

It has to be stated here that stool tesing for trypsin is not a test to "exclude" CF, as mentioned in the question. The gold-standard test for exclusion still remains the sweat test done with pilocarpine-ionotophoresis. If this is not conclusive, genetic testing, pancreatic function test (such as determination of stool fat excretion, pancreatic elastase and trypsin) and other tests may follow. Due to a high variability of trypsin in the stool and a low specifity of the test, it can only be a piece of a puzzle leading to the diagnosis of CF.
