We don't know if our girl has CF, it's not sure yet
- Question
- A blood sample for the genetic testing was taken just to exclude CF. If me and my husband are not CF carriers, is it possible for our child to have it? Or is it possible when both parents have CF?
- Answer
- Hello,
Concerning your question, the genetic testing was probably performed because the child had clinical signs that suggested CF. CF is an autosomal-recessive genetic disorder, meaning that both parents, individually, must be carriers of one CF mutation. A child will only have CF when it inherits two CF mutations, one from each parent. The child will not have CF if it inherits a CF mutation from one parent, but a normal gene from the other, in this case it will be a carrier of a CF mutation like its parents. And in other case two parents who are carriers may have many children and by chance none of the children may have CF.
I hope this information was useful.
