Edible mushrooms
- Question
- Is it correct that people with CF should not go collecting mushrooms and not even eat them?
- Answer
- Dear inquirer,
people with CF can go collecting mushrooms outdoors without hesitation. Like all other people, they should know about edible, inedible, and toxic mushrooms.
Your question might stem from then fact that CF patients can contract certain fungi; mainly Aspergillae such as Aspergillus fumigatus. These Aspergillae colonize mainly humid spaces in buildings (e.g. bathrooms, basements) or contaminate food that is not stored appropriately. Those fungi that are hazardous to lung health have different habitats than the woods, fields, or heaths where you are looking for mushrooms. Enjoy collecting mushrooms.
