Omega 3
- Question
- Hello,
do you think that omega 3 could play a role on lung inflammation in cystic fibrosis? - Answer
- Hello,
CF is characterized by a certain degree of chronic lung inflammation, and abnormal metabolism of essential fatty acids.
Different mechanisms leading to an imbalance between the fatty acids of the anti-inflammatory omega-3 series (including docosahexaenoic acid or DHA) and fatty acids of the pro-inflammatory omega-6.
In cystic fibrosis, the low levels of DHA are partly responsible for the inflammation associated with the disease.
The advice usually given by dieticians are promoting omega-3 in food (rapeseed oil, soy, nuts, fatty fish ..) while respecting the balance between omega-3 and omega-6.
Studies have attempted to assess the interest of a larger oral supplementation of omega-3 on markers of inflammation or the composition of cell membranes. These studies are still few and of small scale, can not currently lead to advise the use of oral omega-3 supplements routinely.
