Face masks
- Question
- I have a question about wearing a face mask: whom does it actually help – the wearer or the people around him? (Example: on a plane because of swine flu, or in the hospital because of MRSA bacteria) Thank you for your answer.
- Answer
- Hello,
pathological germs can be transmitted via different routes. In case of droplet infection via breathing, coughing, or sneezing, as it is the case with flu viruses and, among others, also with the MRSA bacteria you mention, regular masks usually provide protection. In particular cases, surgical masks (FFP2) are recommended. A mask is worn for one’s own protection, but also, if necessary, to avoid transmitting germs to other people. However, the transmission of flu viruses (and also of MRSA bacteria) is also possible via contaminated surfaces (e.g., worktops, door knobs, etc.) or via the hands, if the viruses/germs were picked up via the hands and are transmitted into the eyes or nose. Therefore, one should pay attention to a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the hands.
There is a particular risk of infection whenever a large number of people are gathered in a small space (e.g. public events, public transport).
